U.S. May Abandon Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks if No Progress in Days, Rubio Warns
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Friday that the Trump administration could abandon efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal if no significant progress is made within days.
Speaking in Paris after constructive talks with U.S., Ukrainian, and European officials, Rubio emphasized the need for swift action to determine the feasibility of a ceasefire in the coming weeks.
The landmark discussions, hosted by France on Thursday, marked the first joint meeting of top American, Ukrainian, and European officials since President Donald Trump’s inauguration to address the ongoing war. French officials indicated a follow-up meeting in London is planned for early next week, which Rubio confirmed he may attend.

The talks produced an outline for peace steps, though Rubio cautioned that the U.S. is not yet at a point of questioning the possibility of a deal.
Rubio and presidential envoy Steve Witkoff have spearheaded U.S. peace efforts, including multiple rounds of negotiations in Saudi Arabia. Witkoff has met Russian President Vladimir Putin three times, Rubio noted.
However, Moscow has rejected a comprehensive ceasefire endorsed by Trump and Ukraine, conditioning it on halting Ukraine’s mobilization and Western arms supplies—demands Kyiv has dismissed.
European allies, wary of Trump’s perceived alignment with Russia, have pressed for a firm U.S. stance. The administration’s push for a resolution comes amid reports of a potential U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal and ongoing Russian missile strikes, including a recent attack in Kharkiv that injured 57, highlighting the urgency of a truce.
