Ex-Pakistan Envoy Openly Threatens Mumbai and Delhi on TV, Says "We Have Done it Earlier"

Former Pakistan envoy Abdul Basit called attacking Mumbai and Delhi Pakistan's default retaliatory move.

Former Pakistani diplomat Abdul Basit has sparked controversy after making provocative remarks about targeting Indian cities during a television discussion. Basit, who previously served as Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India, suggested that attacking cities like New Delhi and Mumbai should be a “default move” if Pakistan were to come under attack, drawing sharp reactions over the tone and implications of his comments.

The remarks were made during a debate in response to statements by Tulsi Gabbard, who had flagged concerns over Pakistan’s long-range ballistic missile programme. Basit criticised what he described as an “anti-Pakistan” perspective, arguing that global scrutiny often overlooks India’s missile capabilities while focusing disproportionately on Pakistan.

During the discussion, Basit also commented on global strategic alignments, stating that the United States views India as a key partner, while Pakistan maintains closer ties with China. He cautioned against assuming long-term strategic alignment with the US, despite recent improvements in bilateral relations.

The remarks have added to ongoing tensions in the region, especially amid heightened geopolitical sensitivities. Analysts note that such statements, even from former officials, can have diplomatic repercussions and further strain already complex relations between India and Pakistan.
