European Leaders Visit Kyiv As Ukraine Celebrates Independence Amid Ongoing War

U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv on Monday for his first overseas trip since taking office, joining other European leaders in the Ukrainian capital as the country marked its 35th Independence Day. Burnham is expected to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and co-chair a meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, a group of countries backing Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing war. His visit is intended to reaffirm Britain’s commitment to Ukraine and underline continued European support as Kyiv seeks military and diplomatic backing.

The visit brings together several senior European officials for the anniversary, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Estonian President Alar Karis. According to the British government, the U.K. has agreed that defence company MBDA can release classified information concerning British components used in the SCALP long-range missile. The decision is intended to allow France and Ukraine to advance plans for local assembly lines in Ukraine, potentially reducing Kyiv’s reliance on externally supplied systems over the longer term.

SCALP is the French-produced version of the Storm Shadow missile used by Britain, with the two systems incorporating shared French and British technology. The release of information on British components is therefore expected to help French and Ukrainian authorities move forward with plans for local production. Britain has previously supplied Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine for use in its defence against Russia, and the latest initiative forms part of wider efforts by European countries to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities and defence industry.

During his time in Kyiv, Burnham is also expected to take part in Ukraine’s Independence Day commemorations and discuss continued international support during the Coalition of the Willing meeting.
