Zelensky Arrives In UK To Hold Talks With Prime Minister Andy Burnham

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in the United Kingdom on Monday for talks with the country's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, with defence cooperation, air defence, maritime security, and joint military production expected to dominate the agenda. The visit comes as Ukraine continues to strengthen strategic partnerships with its allies amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Announcing his arrival on X, Zelensky said his schedule included meetings with Prime Minister Burnham as well as Ukrainian military personnel currently in the UK, including service members who participated in the Sea Breeze exercises. He described the UK as one of Ukraine's closest partners since the start of the full-scale war and said the relationship had reached its strongest point in the history of bilateral cooperation.

Zelensky said the discussions would focus on expanding collaboration in air defence, maritime security, and joint defence manufacturing. He expressed appreciation for Britain's continued support, stating that Ukraine values the UK's leadership and consistent backing. According to the Ukrainian president, both countries intend to deepen their strategic partnership and work together to strengthen regional security.

Ahead of the visit, Zelensky revealed that he had held a phone conversation with Prime Minister Burnham and expressed hope that the bilateral meeting would open a new chapter in UK-Ukraine relations. He said the two leaders would discuss not only Ukraine's immediate defence requirements but also long-term cooperation aimed at enhancing the capabilities of both nations.

A key topic expected to feature in the talks is a proposed "Drone Deal." Zelensky said Ukraine wants to establish a major drone manufacturing facility in Britain using advanced technologies while sharing its battlefield experience in drone warfare. He added that Ukraine is willing to exchange expertise with the UK and explore joint production of advanced defence systems, including missile technology similar to the UK's Storm Shadow missiles and maritime drones.

The Ukrainian president also called for closer European cooperation in developing anti-ballistic air defence capabilities. He said funding, technology sharing, and military training would be essential to future defence collaboration, noting that while the UK has supported Ukraine through training programmes, both countries could benefit from jointly developing new defence technologies and strengthening Europe's overall security infrastructure.
