Esmaeil Kowsari Advises Iran to Carefully Consider Talks With US
Iran lawmaker urges caution amid possible US negotiations
A senior member of Iran’s parliament has urged caution regarding potential talks with the United States, warning that Tehran must carefully evaluate any negotiations amid a history of U.S. military actions against the country. Esmaeil Kowsari, a member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee and a major general in the Iranian military, emphasised the need for prudence in a statement to the Fars news agency.
“This is not the first time they have lied about negotiations,” Kowsari said, referring to Washington’s record of launching attacks on Tehran while peace talks were reportedly underway. He cautioned that any engagement with the U.S. should be approached with careful consideration to avoid being misled.
Kowsari also criticised U.S. and Israeli leadership, specifically citing former President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing them as inherently untrustworthy. “Trump, Netanyahu and their ilk are inherently liars and their nature is to sow division,” he said, framing the potential talks as a strategic trap designed to undermine Iranian public confidence.
The senior lawmaker elaborated that such tactics are intended to create internal scepticism toward Iranian authorities. “Their nature is to create division so that they can make people sceptical of the authorities and feel that something has been done, when nothing has been done,” Kowsari added, warning that perceived negotiations could be used for political propaganda rather than genuine conflict resolution.

Iran’s leadership has remained cautious amid ongoing international diplomatic efforts, particularly with the United States, following heightened tensions in the region. Kowsari’s comments underscore the deep mistrust within Iran’s military and political circles regarding U.S. intentions, reflecting a broader sentiment of caution toward engagement with foreign powers.
The remarks come amid reports of informal communications between U.S. and Iranian officials, which have fuelled speculation about potential talks. Kowsari’s warning signals that any discussions will likely face intense scrutiny from Iran’s political and military establishment, with decisions weighing both strategic security concerns and domestic public perception.
The issue of trust and credibility remains central to Iran’s approach to international negotiations. Kowsari’s statement highlights the difficulty Tehran faces in balancing diplomatic overtures with a history of regional conflict, emphasising a cautious approach while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics.
