Earthquake Measuring 7.6 Magnitude Strikes Near Tonga, Tsunami Alerts Issued
7.6-magnitude earthquake strikes near Tonga, triggering tsunami alerts
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck near Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, authorities reported. The tremor, which was centred offshore, triggered tsunami warnings for several neighbouring islands and raised concerns about potential damage and casualties.
According to Tonga’s geological monitoring agencies, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth, increasing the risk of significant shaking across coastal areas. Residents in Nuku’alofa and other parts of the main island were reportedly jolted awake by the tremor, with many evacuating to higher ground following official advisories.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for Tonga and surrounding island nations, advising coastal communities to move inland and avoid low-lying areas until further assessments could be made. Emergency response teams were mobilised to monitor coastal regions and assist with evacuations where necessary.
Local authorities reported that, despite the severity of the quake, there were no immediate confirmed reports of casualties or major structural damage. However, assessments are ongoing, particularly in remote villages where communication infrastructure has been affected by the shaking. Authorities cautioned that aftershocks are expected in the coming hours, posing additional risks to residents and rescue teams.
The 7.6-magnitude tremor comes just months after Tonga experienced another major seismic event, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Experts have warned that the South Pacific, situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to frequent seismic activity due to tectonic plate movements.

Emergency services and disaster management authorities are coordinating efforts to provide assistance, assess infrastructure damage, and ensure the safety of residents. Officials are urging people to stay alert, follow official advisories, and report any incidents of damage or injury.
As the situation develops, regional governments and international agencies have pledged support for Tonga, with disaster response teams on standby to provide aid if required. Residents continue to monitor official channels for updates while taking precautions against possible aftershocks and tsunami risks.
