Delhi-NCR Bus Gang-Rape Case: Police Arrest 2, Probe Safety Violations in Private Sleeper Bus

A 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a bus driver and conductor inside a moving bus after being misled into boarding the vehicle near Pari Chowk in Greater Noida. Police said the incident took place on August 4, when the Class 11 student was travelling towards Noida. The two accused have since been arrested, while the investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the movement of the bus from Greater Noida to Delhi.

According to Delhi Police, the survivor is from Mainpuri and had left her home on August 3 without informing her parents after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling to her cousin’s house in Sector 63, Noida. After it became dark and heavy rain began, she mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk. Police said she subsequently noticed a bus approaching and signalled to the driver to stop, believing it could help her reach her intended destination.

The bus was reportedly empty and was returning after undergoing repairs at a workshop in Surajpur. The conductor allegedly told the girl that the vehicle was travelling towards Sector 63, following which she boarded it. According to her complaint, the conductor began behaving inappropriately after the bus started moving. She alleged that the two men subsequently sexually assaulted her and threatened to kill her when she attempted to resist. The allegations form the basis of the police investigation.

Police said the bus travelled nearly 47 kilometres from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal in Delhi. Investigators said the vehicle took the Greater Noida-Noida Expressway before entering Delhi through the Chilla border, then passed through Mayur Vihar and continued along the Ring Road towards Kashmere Gate. Curtains had reportedly been drawn across the windows of the bus, making it difficult for people outside to see inside the vehicle.

After the journey ended, the accused allegedly left the girl near the Ring Road and fled. The survivor subsequently approached the Kashmere Gate police station, following which Delhi Police registered a case under relevant provisions relating to gang rape, kidnapping and assault. Police have arrested both the driver and conductor in connection with the allegations. Investigators are examining the survivor’s account, the route taken by the bus and other available evidence as part of the case.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of passengers, particularly minors who may depend on public or private transport while travelling between cities. The circumstances described by the survivor also highlight the risks faced by people who become stranded or lose their way after dark and may have to seek assistance from unfamiliar vehicles or individuals. As the investigation proceeds, police are expected to establish the sequence of events and examine evidence connected with the bus and the accused.
