Delhi Techie Dies After Alleged Assault by Wife's Family, Says Police

Delhi techie dies after alleged assault by wife's family, four arrested.

A 31-year-old software engineer, Vinay Gupta, died after he was allegedly assaulted by members of his wife’s family at his home in Delhi’s Nihal Vihar on Friday. Police have arrested his wife Rekha, her two brothers Raju and Vedprakash, and her sister-in-law Poonam in connection with the case. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and statements from family members and neighbours to establish exactly how the incident unfolded.

According to police, the dispute began after Gupta reportedly asked his wife to apply medicine to their young son, who had developed blisters on his body. Rekha allegedly refused, following which an argument broke out between the couple. Police said Rekha subsequently left the house and called her two brothers and sister-in-law. The three relatives later arrived at the house, where the situation allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation involving Gupta.

Gupta’s parents, who live at the same house, have described the assault as particularly brutal. His father, Prem Chand, said the relatives initially told the family that they had come to speak with Vinay. He said he briefly went inside to get water, but when he returned, the men had allegedly begun assaulting his son. Gupta’s mother, Renu, said she and her husband repeatedly asked the attackers to stop and resolve the dispute peacefully, but their appeals were allegedly ignored.

According to his mother, the accused allegedly pushed Gupta to the floor, pinned him down and repeatedly struck him. She said the attackers kicked and punched him in the stomach and also grabbed him by the neck. She recalled going outside to call neighbours for help, but by the time she returned, the assault had ended and her son was in critical condition. Gupta was taken to hospital but died on the way, leaving his parents devastated. His mother said he was her only child.

Police said Gupta had been married to Rekha, also 31, for around three-and-a-half years and that the couple had four-month-old twins. The deceased was a resident of Laxmi Park and worked as a software engineer at a multinational company in Noida. Investigators are now examining the circumstances inside the house, including the allegation that the CCTV camera installed there was switched off before the assault. Police said the camera was allegedly switched off by Rekha, and this aspect is being investigated to determine its relevance to the incident.

A case has been registered at Nihal Vihar police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to murder, and Section 3(5), concerning acts carried out by several persons in furtherance of a common intention. Police are examining available CCTV footage, while statements from neighbours and family members are being recorded. The four arrested accused are being questioned as investigators work to establish the sequence of events, the individual roles of those involved and the circumstances that led to Gupta’s death. Further legal action will follow based on the investigation and evidence collected.
