Brazilian Authorities Arrest Six After Woman Dies in Negligent Bungee Jump; Safety Failures Exposed
Unregulated bungee operator fails to attach safety cord; 21-year-old dies in Brazil.
A 21-year-old woman died in a tragic bungee jumping accident in Brazil after allegedly being pushed from a bridge without a safety cord attached to her harness. The victim, identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, fell approximately 40 metres from the Ponte do Esqueleto, commonly known as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo, on Saturday. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and prompted a criminal investigation into the organisers of the adventure activity.
Freitas, who had recently graduated in physical education and sports management, reportedly visited the abandoned railway bridge with her fiancé to participate in a bungee jumping event organised by a local adventure company. According to Brazilian media reports, the company allegedly failed to secure the safety cord before the jump. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene following the fall.
Video footage circulating on social media reportedly shows staff members escorting Freitas to the edge of the bridge moments before the jump. Observers later realised that the safety rope remained on the ground as she fell. Witnesses in the video can reportedly be heard shouting warnings after noticing the apparent oversight, raising serious questions about the safety procedures followed during the event.

The tragedy drew additional attention after details emerged about Freitas’ final social media post. Shortly before the jump, she reportedly shared photos and videos from the site on Instagram Stories. In one post, she jokingly wrote, “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?” The remark, intended as light-hearted humour, has since been widely shared online following her death. Reports indicate that her social media profile was later removed.
Authorities have detained six individuals connected to the event, including three people present at the location during the incident. Freitas’ fiancé, who witnessed the accident, reportedly became unwell and required medical attention. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the jump and assessing whether proper safety measures were in place before the activity began.
Law enforcement officials are also investigating whether the organisers possessed the necessary permits and authorisations to conduct the event. According to local authorities, preliminary findings suggest the operation may not have been properly regulated. The case has reignited concerns about safety standards in adventure tourism activities and the importance of strict oversight to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
