Bangladesh To Hold Presidential Election On Aug 20

Bangladesh's Election Commission on Thursday announced that the country's presidential election will be held on August 20 following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin earlier this week. The poll will elect a new head of state in accordance with constitutional provisions, while the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is expected to finalise its nominee in the coming days. The election process has formally begun with the release of the official schedule by the Election Commission.

According to Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, nomination papers will be accepted on August 13 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., while scrutiny of nominations will begin on August 16 and continue until the process is completed. Polling is scheduled to take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on August 20. Ahmed said the schedule was prepared under the Presidential Election Act, 1991, after consultations between the Chief Election Commissioner and the Speaker of Parliament.

The Election Commission has also received the electoral roll of all 350 members of Parliament from the Parliament Secretariat, who will form the electoral college responsible for electing the next president. Officials said the remaining administrative formalities will be completed in accordance with the announced timeline. Under Bangladesh's Constitution, a presidential election must be conducted within 90 days of a vacancy arising due to resignation, death or removal of the incumbent.

With the election schedule in place, attention has shifted to the BNP, which is currently deliberating on its presidential nominee. According to media reports, Prime Minister and BNP chief Tarique Rahman has initiated consultations with senior party leaders to identify a candidate who is politically acceptable and free from major controversy. Several senior leaders are reportedly being considered for the largely ceremonial yet constitutionally significant office.

Among the names under discussion are BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Nazrul Islam Khan, and political analyst and former Dhaka University professor Dr. Mahbub Ullah. Media reports suggest Mirza Fakhrul is among the leading contenders because of his prominent role in the party's political campaigns and engagement with both domestic and international stakeholders. However, party leaders are also weighing whether elevating him to the presidency would require him to step away from active politics as they prepare for the upcoming election.
