8 Indian Sailors Released by Iran, Efforts On for Rest Says MEA

Eight of 16 detained Indian sailors released by Iran, MEA working for remaining eight.

Eight of the 16 Indian sailors detained in Iran have been released and are expected to return home shortly after completing the necessary formalities, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Thursday. The release comes after persistent diplomatic and consular efforts by Indian authorities, highlighting India’s focus on ensuring the welfare of its citizens abroad. Officials emphasized that the remaining eight sailors are still in Iran and India is in constant touch with Iranian authorities to secure their safe release.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, speaking at a media briefing in New Delhi, said that Indian consular officials had visited the sailors in Bandar Abbas and ensured their basic needs were met. “Of the 16 crew members, eight have been released and will return as soon as formalities are completed. For the remaining sailors, we are working closely with the Iranian authorities to provide full support for their welfare and legal needs,” he said, underlining India’s active engagement.

The sailors were on board the vessel MT Valiant Roar, which was detained by Iranian authorities in mid-December 2025. The Indian Embassy in Tehran had immediately sought consular access, while the Consulate in Bandar Abbas followed up multiple times, both through written correspondence and in-person meetings. These interventions were aimed at securing access for the crew, ensuring they could communicate with their families, and arranging legal representation during the ongoing judicial proceedings in Iran.

The MEA also coordinated with the UAE-based company that owns the ship, as well as Iranian agents, to ensure that the vessel received essential supplies, including food, water, and fuel. Emergency assistance was arranged in early January when the crew reported dwindling provisions. Officials noted that India has consistently pressed for humane treatment of the sailors and timely completion of all legal formalities, while remaining closely engaged with the Iranian judicial and naval authorities.

With half the crew already released, India continues to actively pursue the release of the remaining eight sailors. The government reiterated its commitment to their safety and welfare, while maintaining open diplomatic channels to expedite legal procedures. The MEA assured that the mission and consulate would continue to provide support to the sailors and coordinate with the Iranian authorities until all crew members return safely to India.
