Energy Security for 1.4 Billion Indians Remains Top Priority Says MEA

MEA affirms ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion Indians is top priority through diversified sourcing.

The Government of India on Thursday reiterated that ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion citizens remains a top national priority. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that all decisions regarding energy sourcing are guided by market realities and evolving international dynamics, ensuring that India’s energy needs are met reliably and sustainably.

Jaiswal explained that diversifying energy sources is at the core of India’s strategy, allowing the country to adapt to changing global conditions while maintaining stability in supply. He highlighted that the government continuously evaluates options that are commercially viable and strategically beneficial.

Addressing India’s engagement with Venezuela, the MEA spokesperson noted that the South American country has been a longstanding partner in crude oil trade and investment. India resumed imports in 2023–24 after a brief halt due to sanctions but remains open to exploring further opportunities based on commercial feasibility and strategic considerations.

The spokesperson underscored that India’s energy strategy is driven by the principle of self-reliance and resilience, rather than dependence on any single source or external pressure. New Delhi evaluates potential energy partnerships across countries to ensure uninterrupted supply for domestic consumption.

In a recent discussion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Eloína Rodriguez Gomez explored expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and energy. Both leaders emphasized strengthening people-to-people ties and ensuring energy collaboration contributes to mutual growth and stability.

India’s approach reflects a broader effort to safeguard economic growth and national security through energy diversification. By balancing global partnerships, assessing commercial viability, and maintaining strategic flexibility, India aims to secure its energy future while supporting sustainable development for its population.
