Tribal Man Brutally Beaten at Coal Plant in Madhya Pradesh; Case Filed, Minister Intervenes
A Baiga tribal man was beaten by security at the Nigahi Coal Plant; three were arrested, and an SC/ST case was filed.
A video showing a tribal man being beaten with a hockey stick inside a coal plant premises has triggered widespread outrage, prompting police to register a case and detain two accused persons. The incident reportedly took place near the Nigahi Coal Handling Plant operated by Northern Coalfields Limited, and came to light after the footage circulated widely on social media.
The victim, identified as Anne Lal Baiga from the Baiga community, is seen in the video lying on the ground and pleading for mercy while being assaulted. The accused, including a security in-charge identified as MD Singh, allegedly continued the attack despite repeated pleas, with bystanders reportedly present at the scene during the incident.
According to police officials, the incident occurred around a month ago when the victim had gone into a nearby forest with his wife to collect firewood. Security personnel stationed in the area allegedly stopped him on suspicion of scrap theft and proceeded to assault him during questioning. The video also shows the man collapsing while the assault continued in front of his wife.

Authorities said the case was registered after the video surfaced, with action initiated by the Nawanagar Police Station. Two of the accused have been taken into custody and are currently being interrogated, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved. Police confirmed that charges have been filed under relevant provisions, including the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
City Superintendent of Police Umesh Prajapati stated that the victim’s account corroborates the sequence seen in the video. He confirmed that the footage appears to be approximately one month old and that a detailed investigation is underway to establish accountability and ensure legal action against those responsible.
The incident has also drawn political attention, with Minister of State for Panchayat and Rural Development Radha Singh visiting the victim’s residence. She assured the family of support and directed officials to ensure proper medical care and expedite basic civic development in the Baiga settlement, including improvements in road and drainage infrastructure.
