Three Dead in Gujarat Road Pit; Police File FIR Against Contractor for Safety Violations
Three die in unguarded road pit; police file FIR against contractor.
Police in Gujarat’s Bhuj district have registered a case against a road construction contractor after a series of fatal accidents linked to an allegedly unguarded excavation site on the Daddar-Sadhara road. The action was initiated by the Khavda Police following the deaths of three people after a vehicle reportedly plunged into a deep pit dug for culvert construction.
According to officials, the excavation site was left without adequate safety arrangements, raising serious concerns about negligence and violations of construction safety norms. Investigators stated that the contractor allegedly failed to install warning signboards, barricades, diversion indicators, or reflective markers around the pit, despite the stretch remaining open to public traffic. Police said the absence of basic precautions effectively turned the road into a dangerous zone for commuters travelling through the area at night.
As per details mentioned in the First Information Report, only a small sand embankment had reportedly been placed near the excavation instead of proper protective barriers. Authorities alleged that the inadequate arrangement failed to prevent a Maruti Suzuki Swift car from falling into the pit, leading to the fatal accident. Officials believe that stricter safety compliance and proper barricading could have prevented the tragedy.

The incident has triggered renewed scrutiny of infrastructure and road construction practices in parts of Gujarat, particularly regarding public safety measures at active work sites. Local residents have reportedly expressed anger over the condition of the road and the absence of warning systems, alleging that commuters had repeatedly raised concerns about the excavation before the accident occurred.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the extent of negligence and whether additional parties may be held responsible. Authorities are expected to examine construction approvals, safety compliance records, and the contractor’s adherence to road work regulations as part of the ongoing probe.
The case has once again highlighted broader concerns over infrastructure-related accidents in India, where poorly marked construction zones and inadequate road safety measures continue to contribute to serious and sometimes fatal incidents. Officials said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation and technical assessments of the accident site.
