FM Sitharaman's Russia Visit Cancelled; Lavrov Reassures India on Oil Supplies
FM Sitharaman cancels Russia visit; Lavrov assures continued oil supplies to India.
Nirmala Sitharaman’s proposed visit to Russia has reportedly been cancelled amid growing global attention on Russian crude oil exports to India and ongoing discussions within the BRICS grouping. The Finance Minister was expected to attend high-level meetings related to the BRICS framework, including engagements linked to the New Development Bank, often referred to as the BRICS Bank.
According to reports citing official sources, the cancellation was linked to pressing domestic responsibilities and important parliamentary commitments in India. Preparations related to legislative business, including discussions surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill, were among the reasons cited for the change in schedule. The development comes at a time when BRICS member countries are attempting to deepen economic and financial cooperation amid shifting global trade dynamics and geopolitical tensions.
The New Development Bank continues to play a central role within the BRICS framework by supporting infrastructure financing and development initiatives across emerging economies. India has remained an active participant in BRICS-led economic discussions, particularly in areas related to trade, infrastructure investment, and alternative financial mechanisms aimed at reducing dependence on Western-dominated institutions. Sitharaman’s expected participation was viewed as part of broader efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation among developing nations.

Meanwhile, Sergey Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s commitment to maintaining energy supplies to India despite what he described as “unfair external competition". Lavrov stressed that the partnership between India and Russia remains strong and strategically important, particularly in the energy sector. Russian crude oil exports to India have expanded significantly in recent years as India increased purchases of discounted oil amid global market disruptions and sanctions imposed on Moscow following the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The issue of Russian oil flows to India has attracted heightened international scrutiny, especially from Western countries monitoring trade and energy ties involving Moscow. However, India has consistently defended its energy procurement strategy, stating that it prioritises national economic interests and energy security. Indian officials have repeatedly maintained that purchasing affordable crude oil is essential for managing inflation and ensuring stable fuel supplies for the country’s large population and industrial sector.
The cancellation of Sitharaman’s Russia visit also comes during a period of increasing diplomatic activity within BRICS as member nations discuss reforms to global financial systems and stronger economic coordination among emerging markets. Despite the scheduling change, India and Russia are expected to continue close engagement through bilateral and multilateral channels on issues ranging from trade and energy to financial cooperation and infrastructure development.
