Supreme Court Confirms Detention of Ranya Rao in Gold Smuggling Case

Supreme Court upholds detention of actor Ranya Rao in smuggling case.

The Supreme Court has upheld the preventive detention of Kannada actor Harshavardhini Ranya, also known as Ranya Rao, in connection with an alleged gold smuggling case, reinforcing earlier orders passed under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities (COFEPOSA) Act. The ruling also confirmed the detention of her alleged aide, Sahil Sarkariya Jain, in the same case.

The judgment comes after petitions challenged a Karnataka High Court order dated December 19, 2025, which had already upheld the detention directives issued on April 22, 2025, by the Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB). A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh examined the matter and ultimately dismissed the legal challenge, thereby validating the preventive detention framework used in the investigation.

According to court records, the case originated after authorities intercepted Ranya at Bengaluru airport on March 3, 2025, near the Green Channel. Officials reportedly recovered 17 foreign-marked gold bars weighing approximately 14.2 kilograms during the search, which triggered a broader investigation into suspected smuggling links and networks connected to the seized gold.

The Supreme Court noted that arguments raised by the petitioner regarding procedural lapses in the handling of representations were not sufficient to invalidate the detention orders. The court observed that the communications rejecting representations were issued on behalf of the competent authorities and reflected decisions taken by the relevant statutory bodies, including the detaining authority and the Government of India.

The ruling effectively strengthens the legal basis for the preventive detention of the actor and her alleged associate, while reaffirming the scope of COFEPOSA in dealing with suspected economic offences involving cross-border smuggling activities. The court’s decision underscores the judiciary’s deference to preventive detention measures in cases involving national economic security concerns.

With the Supreme Court’s confirmation, the detention orders against Ranya and her aide will continue to remain in force, while related investigations by enforcement agencies are expected to proceed further. Authorities have not indicated any immediate change in custody status following the verdict.
