Pope Leo Declares World Under Siege by Tyrants as His War of Words With Trump Escalates Further

Pope Leo XIV's Africa tour remarks signal a deepening public feud with the Trump administration over war.

US-born Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong statement criticising global leadership amid escalating tensions over the ongoing conflict in West Asia, saying the world is being “ravaged by a handful of tyrants". His remarks come at a time of heightened diplomatic friction between the Vatican’s position on the war and the stance of the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The comments were made at the beginning of Pope Leo’s Africa tour, where he addressed global conflicts and urged leaders to reconsider the moral implications of warfare. Without naming specific countries or leaders, he warned against the misuse of religion and power, stating that some have manipulated “the very name of God” to justify violence and political objectives.

His statement is being widely interpreted as a pointed critique of global political leadership, including the US administration’s role in the ongoing West Asia conflict. The remarks have added further strain to already tense relations between the Vatican and Washington, particularly over differing approaches to the war and humanitarian crisis in the region.

Tensions escalated further after US President Donald Trump publicly criticised Pope Leo, accusing him of being “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy". The comments came after the Pope had earlier called for an immediate end to the war, urging restraint and renewed diplomatic efforts instead of continued military escalation.

Adding to the controversy, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also weighed in, using biblical references in a critique of media coverage of the conflict. He compared journalists to Pharisees, describing them as adversaries who were allegedly distorting narratives around the US-Israeli military actions against Iran, further intensifying the political and rhetorical clash.

As the dispute continues, the exchange between religious and political leadership has underscored deep divisions over the war and its global implications. The Vatican has maintained its call for peace and dialogue, while the US administration has defended its actions, setting the stage for continued international debate over morality, governance, and conflict.
