Seven Booked, Including Prison Staff, Over Phone Smuggled to Convicted Ex-MP Prajwal Revanna
Seven booked as probe expands into prison phone-smuggling network.
Seven people, including two prison personnel, have been booked for allegedly supplying a mobile phone and SIM card to former MP Prajwal Revanna inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, where he is serving a life sentence in a rape case. Investigators are examining a suspected network involving prison inmates, intermediaries and personnel who may have facilitated the device’s entry into the facility.
The case came to light after a mobile phone was recovered from the barrack where Revanna was lodged. Police are tracing the device and SIM card to determine how they entered the prison and identify those involved in arranging their use. The alleged network has reportedly been linked to the DJ Halli area, with investigators examining the roles of several individuals.
Those booked include Pratap Rao, Tausif, Siddiq and prison officials Prakash and Manjunath. Parappana Agrahara police inspector B Naveen said investigators believe the phone reached Revanna through a chain involving inmates and prison personnel. The probe is being conducted by a special team formed under DCP Narayan following the recovery of the device.

According to police, Tausif is suspected to have purchased the mobile phone while undergoing treatment at Jayanagar Hospital, while a SIM card was allegedly obtained in Siddiq’s name and taken into the prison. Investigators suspect that Revanna paid approximately ₹1 lakh for the phone and ₹50,000 for the SIM card, though the financial aspects of the transaction remain under investigation.
Police have also traced SIM cards linked to the alleged network to Andhra Pradesh, including one reportedly purchased in Punganur. Call detail records are being examined, with investigators looking into calls made to women and family members. Notices may be issued to some of those contacted as part of the effort to establish how the communication network operated from inside the prison.
The investigation is also examining financial transactions, electronic evidence and the possible involvement of warders and inmates in bringing mobile devices into the facility. A separate case had earlier been registered against two people over alleged illegal mobile phone use inside the prison. Authorities are now seeking to determine whether the latest case forms part of a wider system of unauthorised communication and contraband access within Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
