Rajasthan HC Gives Asaram More Time Out of Jail

Court cites critical health, orders fresh medical panel review.

In a fresh twist to one of India’s most infamous criminal cases, the Rajasthan High Court on Monday extended the interim bail of convicted self-styled godman Asaram until August 29. The 82-year-old, currently serving a life sentence for raping a minor disciple at his gurukul, was set to have his bail expire on August 12.

The extension was granted by a division bench comprising Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar Mathur after reviewing detailed medical reports that painted a grim picture of his health condition.

The court’s decision comes on the heels of the Gujarat High Court’s recent move to extend his interim bail in a similar case until August 21. Asaram is presently admitted to a hospital in Indore, where his condition is reportedly critical.

In response to the medical findings, the Rajasthan High Court has directed the formation of a specialized panel of doctors from a government hospital in Ahmedabad, including both a cardiologist and a neurologist, to conduct a thorough examination.

This panel’s report must be submitted by August 27—just two days before the latest bail extension lapses—potentially setting the stage for another courtroom showdown over the controversial figure’s future.
