Punjab Police Confirm Viral Drugs Video Is From State, Not Rajasthan

BJP MP and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh's latest social media post on Punjab's drug problem has received confirmation from police after authorities established that a viral video he shared was indeed recorded in Jagraon. The development comes after Singh faced criticism earlier for sharing a separate video from Rajasthan while identifying it as footage from Punjab. The latest police clarification has added a new turn to the political debate over drug abuse in the state.

Singh had shared a video posted on X by BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu, showing a young man allegedly consuming drugs under a bridge. While responding to criticism over the location of the footage, Singh said even the Jagraon bridge could now be claimed to be in Rajasthan by “paid trolls”. His latest post came against the backdrop of continuing political exchanges over the extent of drug abuse and the government's efforts to tackle the problem in Punjab.

The Punjab Police has confirmed that the latest video was recorded near Jagraon, although officials said the footage may be old. Police also said the man seen allegedly consuming drugs under the Jagraon bridge had been arrested by Ludhiana police on August 12. The confirmation distinguishes the latest video from an earlier clip shared by Singh that was later traced to Rajasthan, prompting questions over its use in political messaging.

The earlier controversy began after Singh posted a video showing two apparently intoxicated men walking along a road and expressed concern over Punjab's drug situation. The footage was subsequently found to have originated in Rajasthan rather than Punjab. The episode became part of the political debate over the state's drug crisis, with opposition leaders using such videos to target the Aam Aadmi Party government and question its handling of the issue.

Punjab has continued to face concerns over substance abuse, with opioids, heroin, synthetic drugs and diverted pharmaceutical substances among the drugs associated with the state's problem. Authorities have also focused on drug trafficking networks, including those operating along the Pakistan border, where agencies have reported the use of drones and other methods to move narcotics. Government efforts include arrests, seizures, enforcement operations and measures aimed at de-addiction and rehabilitation.

The latest development has provided Singh with police confirmation that the video he shared was from Punjab, even as the wider political dispute over the state's drug problem continues. The AAP government has been highlighting its action against drug networks, while opposition parties have continued to question whether enforcement efforts are sufficient. The contrasting claims and social media posts have made the verification of viral footage particularly significant in the ongoing political debate.
