Professor and Three Students Charged After Himachal College Girl Dies Following Assault Allegations

Himachal college student dies after alleged ragging and sexual assault by three female students and professor.

A second-year student of a government degree college in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, has died following alleged sexual harassment and ragging, prompting police to book a professor and three female students. Authorities confirmed that charges have been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009.

According to police, the student recorded a video on her mobile phone before her death, detailing instances of inappropriate behaviour, mental harassment, and ragging. In the video, she reportedly accused a professor of touching her inappropriately and subjecting her to sustained psychological pressure both inside the classroom and on campus.

The student’s father alleged in his police complaint that on September 18, his daughter was assaulted and intimidated by three senior female students as part of a ragging incident. He claimed the accused threatened her to remain silent, adding that the harassment caused severe mental stress, leading to a steady decline in her health.

The family stated that the student underwent treatment at multiple hospitals over the following months before succumbing on December 26 at DMC Hospital in Ludhiana. They said the trauma of her condition and subsequent death delayed their formal complaint, which they filed after reviewing the video she left behind.

Police officials said an initial complaint submitted on December 20 focused on ragging, but the investigation widened after allegations against the professor emerged. Investigators are now examining medical records from all hospitals where the student received treatment to determine the circumstances leading to her death.

The college administration has distanced itself from the allegations, stating that no formal complaint had been filed earlier. The principal claimed the student had academic irregularities and denied institutional negligence. Meanwhile, police have assured a comprehensive probe, stating that accountability will be fixed based on evidence gathered during the investigation.
