Probe Sought By Australian PM After Nine-Year-Old Injured In Pakistan Police Shooting

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called for a full and transparent investigation after a nine-year-old Australian girl of Pakistani origin was killed in a police firing incident in Pakistan’s Punjab province, a case that has triggered shock and condemnation in both countries. The incident reportedly occurred on June 10 in Chakwal district, located around 300 kilometres from Lahore. According to police statements cited by news agency PTI, officers opened fire on a family vehicle after mistakenly suspecting it to be involved in a robbery attempt.

The situation unfolded amid confusion involving armed suspects reportedly seen on a motorcycle in the area. Nine-year-old Hania was killed in the firing, while her father, Adeel Ahmed (39), and her 10-year-old brother sustained critical injuries. Her mother, Dr Sidra Khan, was also present in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The family had reportedly travelled to Pakistan for a short visit after completing the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, officials said.

Police said the chain of events began when the family’s car was allegedly stopped in connection with a suspected robbery incident involving two armed men on a motorcycle. The father is said to have contacted emergency services immediately after the encounter. The matter was then communicated to the Crime Control Department (CCD), a specialised police unit tasked with tackling serious crime in the region. However, according to initial accounts, CCD personnel allegedly misidentified the family vehicle as being linked to the suspects and opened fire. The shooting resulted in the death of the child and serious injuries to two members of her family.

The incident has raised serious concerns over operational protocols and decision-making during high-pressure law enforcement responses.
