Police Probe Finds Siya Goyal Avoided Eloping Over Family Reputation Concerns
Investigation links family reputation concerns to alleged murder conspiracy.
The investigation into the death of Pune businessman Ketan Agarwal has uncovered what police describe as a chilling motive behind the alleged murder plot, with investigators claiming that concerns over family reputation played a key role in the decisions made by the accused. According to police, Siya Goyal and her alleged boyfriend, Chetan Chaudhary, discussed the possibility of being together but ultimately rejected the idea of calling off her engagement or eloping because of fears that such a move would bring shame to her family.
Ketan Agarwal, 25, had been engaged to Siya Goyal, 20, and preparations were reportedly underway for their wedding. His death initially appeared to be the result of an accidental fall during a trekking trip. Authorities registered the case as an accident and began routine inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, as investigators examined evidence and questioned those close to the deceased, the case took a dramatic turn, leading police to suspect foul play and eventually launch a murder investigation.
According to investigators, questioning of Chetan Chaudhary, 22, revealed details about conversations he allegedly had with Siya regarding their relationship and future plans. Police officials claim that the couple considered running away together but ultimately decided against it. During interrogation, Chetan allegedly told investigators that Siya believed ending the engagement and eloping would damage her family’s reputation and bring social embarrassment. Police say this concern weighed heavily on the couple and influenced the course of events that followed.

A police official, citing Chetan’s alleged statement, said that Siya was not willing to call off the engagement because she feared disrespect to her family. Investigators allege that instead of openly ending the relationship with Ketan, the pair conspired to remove him from the picture altogether. Authorities are now examining whether the alleged plot was planned weeks in advance and how the events leading to Ketan’s death were orchestrated.
The case has generated widespread attention because of the alleged motive and the stark contrast between the initial assessment of the death and the findings that later emerged. What began as an investigation into a trekking accident has evolved into a complex criminal probe involving allegations of conspiracy, deception and murder. Police have reportedly gathered digital evidence, communication records and witness statements as part of their effort to reconstruct the timeline of events and establish the roles played by those involved.
Investigators are also looking into the nature of the relationship between Siya and Chetan and whether there were earlier attempts to find alternatives to the engagement. Authorities believe that understanding the personal dynamics between the accused may provide further insight into the alleged planning of the crime. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have indicated that more details could emerge as evidence continues to be analysed.
While police have outlined their theory of the case, the allegations remain subject to judicial scrutiny. Both accused are entitled to legal representation, and the claims made during the investigation will need to be examined in court. As the probe continues, the case has sparked broader discussions about societal expectations, family pressures and the tragic consequences that can arise when personal relationships become entangled with concerns about reputation and public perception.
