Opposition Questions Law and Order After Delhi Chain Snatching Incident
Opposition slams Centre over chain snatching, safety failures.
A brazen chain-snatching incident targeting Congress MP R. Sudha in Delhi’s high-security Chanakyapuri area has ignited fierce criticism from opposition MPs, who have labeled it a stark failure of law and order in the national capital. The attack occurred around 6:15 AM on Monday near Tamil Nadu Bhavan, where Sudha, a Lok Sabha MP from Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, was on a morning walk with DMK Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi. A helmeted man on a scooter snatched Sudha’s gold chain, worth over four sovereigns, injuring her neck and tearing her churidar before fleeing.
Sudha recounted the ordeal to PTI Videos in Parliament, stating, “I shouted for help, but no one came. A patrol vehicle 200 meters away didn’t respond.” She contacted Congress whip Manickam Tagore, who arranged police assistance. Sudha has filed a complaint with the Chanakyapuri police and written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, demanding swift action. Delhi Police have registered an FIR and are reviewing CCTV footage, with no arrests reported yet.
Opposition MPs unleashed a barrage of criticism. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned, “If an MP isn’t safe in Chanakyapuri’s high-security zone, what about the common public?” Congress MP Jebi Mather slammed the Centre, asking, “Where is women’s safety? This attack in a diplomatic enclave exposes the hollow ‘Beti Bachao’ slogan.” Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari highlighted Delhi’s “deteriorating” law and order, noting, “If Chanakyapuri isn’t safe, what hope is there for ordinary citizens?” Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan added, “The Home Minister is preoccupied with Bihar elections while Delhi’s safety crumbles.”

Union Minister S.P. Singh Baghel defended the government, claiming, “The situation is much better now than before,” but opposition leaders dismissed this, pointing to rising street crimes like chain snatching across Delhi. The incident, occurring in a diplomatic enclave housing embassies and state guest houses, has raised serious questions about security protocols in the capital, prompting calls for enhanced surveillance and policing to protect both public figures and citizens.
