Customs seize hydroponic weed, banned cough syrup

Mumbai Customs arrested four passengers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, seizing drugs worth ₹7.32 crore between July 15 and 20, officials confirmed Tuesday. The operation, led by the Airport Commissionerate, targeted narcotics smuggling from Bangkok and an outbound shipment to Riyadh.

On July 15, Customs intercepted a passenger from Bangkok, recovering 610 grams of hydroponic weed hidden in a trolley bag, valued at approximately ₹61 lakh.

Over the next two days, two more passengers from Bangkok were apprehended with 5.25 kg and 1.45 kg of hydroponic weed, worth ₹5.25 crore and ₹1.45 crore, respectively, concealed similarly.

In a separate case, a passenger bound for Riyadh was detained with 99 bottles of cough syrup containing banned codeine phosphate, valued at ₹1 crore.

All four face charges under the NDPS Act, with investigations ongoing to trace syndicate links. The seizures highlight Customs’ intensified crackdown on high-potency narcotics at Mumbai’s airport.
