Mother Arrested for Killing Infant in Tripura to Elope with Lover
Mother’s Deadly Plan to Elope Revealed
In a chilling incident that has left the community reeling, Tripura Police arrested 28-year-old Suchitra Debbarma for allegedly killing her five-month-old daughter in Sepahijala district’s Rampadapara village. The motive, according to initial investigations, was to clear the way for her to elope with a man with whom she had been engaged in an extramarital affair for over a year.
The horrific act took place on Sunday, August 10, 2025, while Suchitra’s husband, Amit Debbarma, was away working at a rubber plantation. Acting on a tip-off from neighbors, a police team led by Tapas Das, officer-in-charge of Sonamura police station, visited the family’s home. “We found the baby lying lifeless on a bed, with the mother missing,” Das reported. The infant was rushed to Sonamura sub-divisional hospital, where doctors declared her dead. A post-mortem examination is pending to confirm the cause of death.
Suchitra was later apprehended in the village. During interrogation, she reportedly confessed to strangling her daughter, admitting her intent to eliminate the child as an obstacle to her plan to flee with her lover. Preliminary findings suggest marital discord and social pressures, including taunts about the child’s paternity, may have contributed to her drastic actions.
