Migrant Worker's Death in Surat Raises Questions on Isolation of Out-Of-State Laborers
Young Migrant Electrician From Bihar Dies In Surat
A 24-year-old migrant worker from Bihar was allegedly found dead by suicide in Surat’s Hazira area on Saturday, according to police officials. The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Kaif, a resident of Siwan district in Bihar, who had recently moved to Gujarat for work and was employed as an electrician with a multinational company in the industrial Hazira region for the past one month. His sudden death has raised concerns among his colleagues and local authorities, who are now trying to understand the circumstances that led to the incident.
Police sources said Kaif’s family background indicates that his father has been working and residing in Jordan for the last four years, while his mother and siblings continue to live in Siwan, Bihar. Officials further stated that there was no immediate clarity on any personal, financial, or workplace-related issues that may have contributed to the alleged suicide, and investigations are ongoing to establish the exact reason behind the extreme step. Authorities are also examining his recent activities and interactions in Surat.
The incident was reported to Ichhapore police on Saturday afternoon after residents informed them about an accidental death in a chawl located in Mora village, where Kaif was staying with his roommates. Following the alert, a police team immediately reached the spot and secured the area, later recovering the body from the locked room. Initial inspection of the scene did not reveal any signs of external injury, but officials have not ruled out any angle at this stage of the investigation.

According to preliminary statements recorded from Kaif’s roommates, the situation came to light when they returned to their accommodation and found the room locked from the inside. After repeated knocking went unanswered, suspicion grew, prompting one of them to look through a window, where he reportedly saw Kaif lying motionless on the floor. Realising something was wrong, the roommates quickly broke open the door to gain access to the room and attempt to help him.
The roommates immediately alerted emergency services and arranged for an ambulance after finding Kaif unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Surat, where doctors conducted a preliminary examination and declared him dead on arrival, police confirmed. The body was later shifted for post-mortem examination as part of standard procedure, while authorities continued collecting statements from those present at the scene.
Police have recorded detailed statements from Kaif’s roommates and informed his family members in Bihar about the tragic incident. Officials said all possible angles are being examined to determine the circumstances that led to his death, and further investigation is currently underway. The case has also highlighted concerns surrounding the mental health and living conditions of migrant workers in industrial hubs.
