Man Killed In Dehradun Irrigation Dispute, Police Arrest Three Accused
Violent clash over irrigation water in Dehradun leaves one dead and triggers arrests.
A man was killed and tensions escalated in the Bairagiwala area under Sahaspur police station limits in Dehradun district after a violent clash broke out over irrigation water on Saturday night. The incident triggered widespread unrest in the area, including protests, arson and stone-pelting, prompting authorities to deploy additional security forces and suspend internet services as a precautionary measure.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Vinod, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons following a dispute linked to the distribution of irrigation water for agricultural fields. His brothers, Ashok and Rajesh, were also injured in the assault, which reportedly involved around a dozen individuals. Officials said the attack may have been fuelled by both the immediate water dispute and an ongoing local rivalry between the two sides.
Senior police officials confirmed that a case has been registered against three named accused and 12 unidentified persons in connection with the incident. Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobal said all three named accused have been arrested and that police teams have been deployed across the area to monitor the situation and prevent further escalation of violence.

Following the killing, members of the victim’s family and local villagers gathered at the police station late into Saturday night, demanding swift action against those responsible. The situation intensified on Sunday morning when residents took to the streets, blocking roads and staging protests. During the unrest, some individuals reportedly set fire to the house of one of the accused and attempted arson at other nearby properties, while incidents of stone-pelting were also reported, leaving several people injured.
The district administration has placed the area on high alert, citing concerns over law and order and potential disruption of communal harmony. District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan said that adequate police force has been deployed and that an SDM has been stationed in the affected area to closely monitor developments. He added that authorities are in continuous contact with the victim’s family and have assured strict action against those involved in the violence.
In addition, officials confirmed that social media activity is being closely monitored to prevent the spread of misinformation or inflammatory content. As part of enforcement measures, the administration also carried out bulldozer action against alleged illegal encroachments at the houses of the arrested accused, demolishing boundary walls while investigations into the case continue.
