Manjhi Stakes Claim for Rajya Sabha Seat, Signals Tough Stand Within NDA

HAM patron Jitan Ram Manjhi demands a Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar, hinting at an alliance rethink within NDA.

Union Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) Patron Jitan Ram Manjhi has firmly staked his party's claim to one Rajya Sabha seat from Bihar ahead of the biennial elections scheduled for April 2026. With five seats falling vacant from the state, Manjhi emphasized that his HAM(S), which secured five assembly seats in the recent elections as part of the NDA, deserves representation in the Upper House. The former Bihar Chief Minister expressed frustration over perceived neglect within the alliance, warning that failure to accommodate his demand could force him to reconsider options for his party.

Manjhi's assertion comes amid speculation that the ruling NDA, which holds a comfortable majority in the Bihar assembly, will sweep all five Rajya Sabha seats. The coalition includes major partners like the BJP and JD(U), alongside smaller allies such as HAM(S) and VIP. Manjhi highlighted his party's electoral contribution and long-standing loyalty to the NDA, arguing that denying a seat would be unjust. He has been vocal about feeling sidelined in seat-sharing and ministerial allocations despite HAM(S)'s consistent support.

The demand has stirred discussions within Bihar's political circles, with NDA leaders yet to respond officially. Sources indicate internal deliberations are underway to balance demands from allies, including Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), which also seeks greater recognition. Manjhi's tough stance underscores growing assertiveness among smaller NDA partners eager for proportional rewards after the assembly polls.

As a prominent Mahadalit leader, Manjhi's influence remains significant in certain pockets of Bihar, making his grievances a potential flashpoint for alliance dynamics. His comments signal conditional commitment to the NDA, reminiscent of past exits and realignments in Bihar's fluid politics.

With Rajya Sabha polls approaching, the outcome of Manjhi's claim could test the cohesion of the NDA in Bihar. Observers watch closely for negotiations that may involve compromises on seats or other concessions to maintain unity ahead of future electoral battles.
