Man Arrested In Ahmedabad For Impersonating Police Officer On Dating Apps Using AI Photos

Ahmedabad man used AI images to impersonate cop and cheat women online.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch has arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a Gujarat Police Sub-Inspector and defrauding multiple women through dating and matrimonial platforms by using AI-generated photographs, forged identity documents, and fake police credentials. The accused, identified as Himanshu alias Rocky Panchal, originally hails from Udaipur in Rajasthan and was residing in the Sabarmati area of Ahmedabad at the time of his arrest.

According to police officials, the accused created fake online profiles on platforms such as Shaadi.com, Jeevansathi, Bumble, Hinge, and Instagram, where he posed as a Sub-Inspector posted in the Crime Branch’s Cyber Security unit. Investigators said he used artificial intelligence tools to generate realistic images of himself in police uniform and uploaded them to strengthen his false identity. He also allegedly used editing applications to create forged identity cards featuring government insignia and Crime Branch branding.

Police further stated that the accused collected police-related accessories such as badges, belts, caps, and Ashoka emblem stickers to make his impersonation more convincing. Authorities said he carefully constructed his fake identity over several months and used it to build romantic relationships with women, often promising marriage while maintaining his false persona as a serving police officer.

Investigators allege that over the past six months, the accused established relationships with more than 20 women across different states and financially exploited several of them under various pretences. In multiple cases, he reportedly convinced victims to transfer money for fabricated emergencies, personal expenses, and even claimed professional requirements related to his supposed police duties.

Police also revealed that the accused had a prior criminal case registered in Mumbai in 2025, where he was accused of impersonation and rape after allegedly deceiving a woman he met through a dating app. In the present case, several complaints from Ahmedabad, including Navrangpura and Naroda police stations, detail how he extracted money ranging from tens of thousands to over a lakh of rupees from different victims using similar tactics.

Officials added that during the arrest, police recovered forged identity cards, a mobile phone, cash, and police insignia materials from his possession. The Crime Branch has registered offences under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway to identify additional victims and trace the full extent of the alleged fraud network operated by the accused across multiple states.
