Lakhimpur Kheri Case: UP Police Clears Ajay, Ashish Mishra Of Intimidation Charges
UP Police Denies Mishra Duo's Role In Witness Intimidation
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday told the Supreme Court that former Union minister Ajay Mishra and his son Ashish Mishra were not involved in the alleged intimidation of witnesses in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. The submission was made during a hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana. The court was also informed that the trial in the case is expected to conclude within the next three months. The police statement came in response to concerns surrounding allegations of attempts to influence or threaten witnesses linked to the case.
The state authorities informed the apex court that their investigation had not found evidence suggesting the involvement of Ajay Mishra or Ashish Mishra in any alleged witness intimidation. The submission is part of the ongoing judicial proceedings in a case that has remained under close observation because of the seriousness of the allegations and the political prominence of those associated with it. During the hearing, the Supreme Court was updated on the progress of the trial, with authorities indicating that the proceedings are moving towards completion.
The court has previously emphasised the need for a fair and time-bound trial while ensuring that all parties involved receive adequate opportunity to present their case. The assurance that the trial is likely to conclude within three months provides a timeline for the next stage of the long-running legal proceedings. The Lakhimpur Kheri violence took place on October 3, 2021, in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district during protests against the now-repealed farm laws. Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the incident. According to allegations made during the investigation, a convoy of vehicles linked to Ashish Mishra allegedly struck protesting farmers, leading to their deaths.

Ashish Mishra has denied the allegations and maintained that he was not responsible for the violence. The incident triggered widespread political reactions across the country, with opposition parties targeting the government over accountability and the handling of the investigation. Following the violence, Ashish Mishra was arrested and later granted bail by the Allahabad High Court. The Supreme Court subsequently intervened in aspects related to the trial process, including concerns over delays and witness protection measures.
The apex court has continued to monitor developments in the case, stressing that the judicial process should proceed without unnecessary interruptions. Witness protection has been a key concern in several high-profile criminal cases, and the court has previously sought updates from authorities regarding steps taken to ensure witnesses can provide testimony without fear or pressure. The latest submission by the Uttar Pradesh Police does not determine the final outcome of the criminal case, as the trial court will ultimately assess the evidence and decide whether the accused are guilty or not.
The statements made by investigating authorities will form part of the broader proceedings, but the court's decision will depend on witness testimonies, documentary evidence and other material presented during the trial. As the proceedings move towards their expected conclusion, the Lakhimpur Kheri case continues to attract attention due to its legal and political implications. The Supreme Court's monitoring of the matter highlights the importance of ensuring a transparent judicial process, while the upcoming trial conclusion will determine the legal responsibility of those accused in the violence that shook Uttar Pradesh in 2021.
