Iran Sends Private Warning To Vance Over Trump's Aide, Son-In-Law Allegations

Iran Sends Private Warning To Vance Amid Tensions

Iranian negotiators reportedly sent a private message to US Vice President JD Vance during indirect talks held in Switzerland in late June, warning that President Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, could undermine efforts to convert a June 17 memorandum of understanding (MoU) into a lasting agreement. The claim was reported by investigative news outlet Drop Site, citing a senior Iranian official familiar with the discussions.

According to the report, the message conveyed Tehran's concern that Witkoff and Kushner were interfering with ongoing diplomatic efforts and could jeopardise progress made during the indirect negotiations. The Iranian side allegedly argued that their actions were complicating attempts to build a durable framework for future engagement between the two countries. Neither the White House nor the offices of Vance, Witkoff or Kushner have publicly confirmed the existence or contents of the reported communication.

The reported exchange is said to have taken place during indirect negotiations mediated in Switzerland, where representatives from both sides were exploring ways to preserve dialogue despite longstanding tensions between Washington and Tehran. While details of the reported June 17 memorandum have not been made public, the talks were reportedly aimed at identifying areas where limited cooperation or confidence-building measures could be pursued without direct bilateral negotiations.

Relations between the United States and Iran have remained strained over issues including sanctions, regional security, Iran's nuclear programme and military activities in the Middle East. Diplomatic engagement has largely taken place through intermediaries, with countries such as Switzerland often facilitating communication between the two sides. Reports of private messages exchanged during such talks are difficult to verify independently, as both governments typically refrain from commenting on confidential diplomatic discussions.

The Drop Site report further claimed that Iranian officials viewed certain members of the US administration as more supportive of negotiations than others, reflecting perceived divisions over the direction of American policy towards Iran. However, no official statements from either government have substantiated these assertions, and the reported differences remain unverified.

As of now, neither Washington nor Tehran has publicly commented on the reported message to JD Vance or the allegations concerning Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The claims remain based on unnamed sources cited by Drop Site and should be viewed in that context until independently confirmed. Any future progress in US-Iran diplomacy is expected to depend on continued indirect engagement and the willingness of both sides to bridge longstanding differences through negotiations.
