Kolkata Law Student Seeks College Transfer After Campus Gang-Rape
Gang-rape survivor from Kolkata law college seeks transfer to continue studies safely.
A first-year student at South Calcutta Law College, who was gang-raped on campus in June, has decided not to return to the institute and is seeking a transfer to another college in Kolkata, her family announced on Friday. The traumatic incident, allegedly perpetrated by alumnus Monojit Mishra and two current students—who were subsequently suspended—occurred on the evening of June 25, leaving the student determined to pursue her education elsewhere.
The student’s father confirmed that she has applied for a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the college, which is cooperating with the request. “My daughter has applied for a no-objection certificate from the college and it is cooperating with us. She also wrote to Calcutta University for a change in institute,” he said. He emphasized the family’s resolve, stating, “We want her to pursue her career, but we don’t want to send her back to that campus again.” The father met with the college’s Vice-Principal, Nayna Chatterjee, to facilitate the transfer process. Chatterjee, who has been managing administrative duties in the absence of a principal, declined to comment as the case is sub judice.
Calcutta University, to which the law college is affiliated, acknowledged the family’s request. Officiating Vice-Chancellor Santa Datta stated, “We received a mail from the family requesting a change of college. We are looking into the matter sympathetically.” The student, still recovering from the trauma, appeared for her semester exams in July at an alternative venue, not on the college campus, to accommodate her situation.

The family’s decision reflects their commitment to supporting the student’s academic aspirations while prioritizing her emotional recovery. As the legal proceedings continue, Calcutta University’s response will be crucial in ensuring the student can resume her education in a safe and supportive environment.
