PM Modi Begins Three-day Strategic Military Conference in Kolkata

Leaders converge for reforms amid Operation Sindoor tensions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down at the Eastern Command headquarters in Kolkata on Monday, September 15, 2025, to kick off the prestigious three-day Combined Commanders’ Conference (CCC), the pinnacle of strategic deliberations for India’s armed forces. Accompanied by the nation’s highest-ranking civil and military brass, the event promises in-depth discussions on defense strategies, reforms, and readiness, setting the stage for transformative changes in the military landscape.

A Defence official highlighted the conference as the ultimate brainstorming hub, where top leaders converge to align on conceptual and operational fronts. This year’s gathering, themed 'Year of Reforms – Transforming for the Future,' arrives against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, India’s bold retaliatory strike in May 2025 targeting terror bases in Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack. The focus will sharpen on institutional overhauls, enhanced integration across services, cutting-edge technological upgrades, and unwavering multi-domain operational preparedness to counter evolving threats.

Modi, who arrived in Kolkata late Sunday from Assam, underscores the government’s commitment to a robust defense posture. The CCC, last hosted in Bhopal in 2023, rotates across commands to foster a nationwide perspective on security challenges. Sessions will delve into jointmanship, theaterisation, and leveraging emerging technologies like AI, cyber warfare, and space assets to future-proof the armed forces.

The Eastern Command, overseeing operations in the sensitive eastern theater—including borders with China and Myanmar—provides an apt venue, emphasizing vigilance in geopolitically volatile regions. Discussions are expected to address lessons from recent operations, supply chain resilience, and bolstering indigenous defense production under Atmanirbhar Bharat. With global tensions rising, from Indo-Pacific dynamics to cross-border terrorism, the conference aims to streamline command structures for swifter, more cohesive responses.

After inaugurating the event, Modi is slated to depart for Purnea in Bihar in the afternoon, where he will launch development projects worth Rs 36,000 crore, blending military strategy with national progress. This seamless itinerary reflects the PM’s hands-on approach to governance, intertwining security imperatives with economic advancement.

The CCC’s outcomes could herald pivotal shifts, such as accelerated procurement of advanced weaponry and deeper civil-military synergy, ensuring India’s armed forces remain agile and formidable. As the nation watches, Modi’s presence signals a renewed era of military evolution, poised to safeguard sovereignty in an unpredictable world.
