#JUSTIN: ED Detains Hyderabad Doctor In Connection With Hawala, Money Laundering
Enforcement Directorate arrests a Hyderabad doctor for alleged involvement in hawala and money laundering, investigations ongoing.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday arrested a Hyderabad-based doctor in connection with alleged hawala transactions and money laundering, officials said. The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into unaccounted financial dealings and illicit fund transfers.
The doctor, whose identity has not been officially disclosed, is accused of facilitating the movement of large sums of money through informal channels, bypassing banking regulations. Preliminary investigation revealed that the funds were allegedly routed to evade detection by authorities and laundered for personal or business purposes.
ED officials conducted searches at the suspect’s residence and clinic, seizing documents, electronic devices, and other evidence related to financial transactions. The agency has registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and is examining bank records, transaction trails, and communication records to establish the extent of the alleged irregularities.

Authorities said the arrest follows a series of intelligence inputs and financial audits that indicated potential violations of anti-money laundering laws. Investigators are also exploring possible links to larger hawala networks and other individuals involved in the transactions.
Legal experts noted that such cases highlight the Enforcement Directorate’s increasing focus on tracing illicit financial flows, particularly in sectors not traditionally associated with large-scale financial crimes. They emphasized that the PMLA provides a robust framework for investigating and prosecuting money laundering offences.
Officials assured that the investigation would proceed according to due process, with the accused being produced before the designated judicial authority. The ED emphasized its commitment to curbing illicit financial activities and ensuring accountability among individuals and entities involved in unlawful monetary operations.a
