Authorities Rescue 34 Bonded Labourers From Brick Kiln In Bagalkot
Authorities rescued 34 bonded labourers from a brick kiln near Ilkal in Bagalkot, exposing exploitative labour practices.
Authorities rescued 34 bonded labourers from a brick kiln near Ilkal, officials said on Thursday, highlighting ongoing concerns about forced labour practices in the region. The operation was conducted after a tip-off regarding exploitative working conditions at the kiln.
The rescued individuals, who included men, women, and adolescents, were reportedly made to work long hours under harsh conditions with little or no pay. Local police and labour department officials intervened after verifying complaints and found evidence of coercion and illegal retention of wages.
Officials said immediate relief measures were provided to the rescued labourers, including medical attention, food, and temporary shelter. Counsellors and social welfare officers were also deployed to assist them in rehabilitation and reintegration. Legal action is being taken against the kiln owners and other responsible parties under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act.

The labour department emphasized that such incidents, while not uncommon in certain rural and industrial pockets, are a violation of human rights and Indian labour laws. Authorities said continuous monitoring and awareness drives are being conducted to prevent similar exploitation.
Local NGOs and social activists welcomed the rescue, calling for stricter enforcement of labour regulations and regular inspections of brick kilns, factories, and other workplaces where vulnerable workers are employed. They urged state authorities to ensure long-term support for the rescued labourers, including skill development and employment opportunities.
Officials reiterated their commitment to eradicating bonded labour in Karnataka, stating that coordinated efforts between police, labour authorities, and civil society are essential to tackling entrenched exploitative practices and protecting workers’ rights.
