Justice For Anita Devi: Five Convicted For Dowry Harassment And Murder

UP court convicts five for murdering Anita Devi over dowry; each fined Rs 75,000.

A local court in Ballia district has sentenced five members of a family to 10 years of imprisonment for the murder of a woman in connection with dowry demands, bringing closure to a case that dates back to 2024. The convicted individuals include the victim’s husband and his immediate family members.

According to district government counsel Sanjeev Singh, the court of District Judge Anil Kumar Jha delivered the verdict on Friday, holding all five accused guilty of killing Anita Devi. The court found that the woman was subjected to harassment over demands for a washing machine and ₹1 lakh in cash, which ultimately led to her death.

The court also imposed a fine of ₹75,000 on each of the convicts in addition to the prison sentence. Those convicted in the case include Anita Devi’s husband Sonu, her father-in-law Dashrath, mother-in-law Tetri Devi, and sisters-in-law Priyanka and Vandana, all of whom were named in the police complaint and subsequent chargesheet.

As per the prosecution, Anita Devi’s body was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Chandi Sarai Sambhal village on March 14, 2024. Her mother, Savitri Devi, later filed a complaint alleging that her daughter had been consistently harassed for dowry since her marriage in November 2022. The complaint further claimed that the harassment escalated over time.

The victim’s family also alleged that her husband was involved in an illicit relationship with a relative, and that Anita faced threats when she objected. Investigators treated the case as a dowry-related killing rather than a case of suicide, leading to the arrest of all five accused.

Following a detailed investigation, the police filed a chargesheet against the accused, which formed the basis of the trial. The court, after examining the evidence and witness testimonies, concluded that the allegations were proven beyond reasonable doubt, resulting in the conviction and sentencing of all five family members.
