Justice Delayed, Justice Denied: Driver Gets Minimal Fine for Devastating Mumbai Accident

A Mumbai court has imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on a man who struck a 17-year-old girl with his vehicle in 2017, an accident that left the teenager in a vegetative state for several months. The judgment comes nearly nine years after the incident, which had drawn widespread attention in Mumbai because of the seriousness of the injuries suffered by the victim. The accused, identified as P Narayanasamy Poosaripadaiyachi, is now 66 years old and was reportedly driving an official vehicle belonging to the then railway commissioner at the time of the crash.

According to reports, the accident occurred on May 28, 2017, near Churchgate in south Mumbai when Poosaripadaiyachi allegedly hit teenager Nidhi Jethmalani while she was crossing the road at a zebra crossing. Investigators had alleged that the Toyota Innova was traveling at nearly 70 kmph and crossed the signal despite a red light before colliding with the student. The incident took place as Nidhi was reportedly on her way to seek admission for Class 12 studies, turning what should have been a routine day into a life-altering tragedy.

The impact of the collision caused severe injuries to the teenager’s head and waist, leaving her critically injured. She was immediately rushed to the hospital by the accused and the railway commissioner who was travelling in the vehicle. Medical reports at the time indicated that Nidhi remained in a vegetative state for months following the accident, leading to prolonged treatment and emotional distress for her family. The case had sparked discussions around road safety, speeding, and accountability involving government vehicles in crowded urban areas.

Police had arrested Poosaripadaiyachi on the same day under charges related to rash and negligent driving. However, he was granted bail within hours of his arrest.
