Chandigarh Court Issues Notice Against Yograj Singh in Web Series Remarks Case

Yograj Singh seeks anticipatory bail; the court notifies police for May 20.

Former Indian cricketer and actor Yograj Singh has moved an anticipatory bail application before a Chandigarh court in connection with an FIR registered over alleged derogatory remarks against women in a purported viral clip from a web series. The matter came up before the District and Sessions Court, which issued a notice to the Chandigarh Police and scheduled the next hearing for May 20. The case has drawn attention because of Yograj Singh’s public profile as both a former sportsperson and actor.

According to officials, the Chandigarh Police had earlier registered an FIR against Yograj Singh at Sector 36 police station under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Police have now additionally invoked Section 61(2) of the BNS in the case. The complaint relates to remarks allegedly made in a clip that circulated online and triggered criticism over its content concerning women.

In his anticipatory bail plea filed through legal counsel, Yograj Singh argued that the disputed clip was taken from a fictional web series in which he portrayed a character as part of his acting assignment. The plea stated that the actor was contractually bound by an agreement related to the production and that the series had been officially released on an OTT platform. His counsel contended that the dialogue and scenes formed part of scripted content rather than personal statements made outside the scope of performance.

The defense further maintained that the viral circulation of isolated portions of the content had led to misunderstanding and public outrage without considering the fictional context of the production. Lawyers representing Yograj Singh are expected to argue that criminal liability should not arise from a performance delivered as part of a professionally produced series. The anticipatory bail plea seeks protection from arrest while the investigation into the matter continues.

The Chandigarh police are expected to place their response before the court during the next hearing. Investigators may examine the original web series content, contractual agreements, and digital evidence linked to the circulation of the clip online. Legal experts note that cases involving digital content, OTT platforms, and artistic performances are increasingly raising questions regarding the balance between creative expression and legal accountability under existing laws.

Yograj Singh, who represented India in cricket before later establishing a career in films and entertainment, has frequently remained in the public spotlight because of his outspoken views and media appearances. The latest controversy has generated discussion on social media and within legal circles regarding the interpretation of fictional performances in online content. The court’s proceedings on May 20 are expected to determine the immediate legal relief sought by the former cricketer as the investigation moves forward.
