Hyderabad Undercover Operation Exposes Women’s Safety Gaps as 40 Men Approach Cop
Undercover cop approached by 40 men, exposing safety concerns
In a late-night undercover operation to assess women’s safety, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner Sumathi stood alone at a city bus stop for three hours, during which she was reportedly approached by nearly 40 men. The exercise, conducted between 12:30 am and 3:30 am, aimed to evaluate ground realities beyond official complaints and reports.
Disguised as an ordinary civilian and without any visible police presence, the officer positioned herself in a public area to observe behavior firsthand. According to officials, many of the men who approached her appeared to be intoxicated, with some suspected to be under the influence of narcotics. The individuals, largely comprising young men including students and working professionals, were unaware of her identity.
The findings of the operation raised concerns about the safety environment for women during late-night hours in the city. Authorities said the high number of unsolicited approaches within a short period highlighted the need for stronger awareness and preventive measures to ensure safer public spaces.

Following the exercise, police identified those involved using surveillance inputs and field verification. Instead of immediately pursuing legal action, authorities opted for counselling sessions, issuing strict warnings to the individuals regarding inappropriate conduct and behavior toward women in public places.
The initiative has drawn appreciation from residents, particularly women, who viewed the move as a proactive step toward understanding and addressing safety concerns. Officials indicated that such field-based assessments could help shape more responsive policing strategies in the future.
This is not the first time Commissioner Sumathi has undertaken such an exercise. Early in her career, she reportedly carried out a similar operation near Kazipet station to gauge safety conditions. A senior IPS officer of the Telangana cadre, she has also served in key roles including heading the State Intelligence Bureau and was recently appointed as Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri on May 1.
