Hyderabad Man Gets Challan For Stolen Scooter, Thief's Photo on Fine Leads to Arrest

Hyderabad bike thief arrested after his face appeared on victim's traffic challan.

A stolen scooter case in Hyderabad took an unexpected turn after a traffic challan containing an image of the suspected rider helped police trace and recover the vehicle. The incident, which began as a routine vehicle theft complaint, gained attention after the owner flagged the matter on social media platform X, prompting swift police action.

The scooter owner, identified as Faisal Rahman, said the vehicle was stolen on January 24 and had already been reported to the police. However, he was surprised when he received a traffic challan dated March 1 for the same scooter, which included a photograph of a man riding it without a helmet. Rahman later posted the image online, claiming it showed the “thief” using his stolen vehicle.

The post quickly went viral, drawing attention from both the public and Hyderabad police. Officials noted that the stolen vehicle had already been under investigation, but the viral post helped accelerate verification efforts. Police also expressed concern that sharing such information publicly could potentially alert suspects and complicate the investigation process.

According to Habeeb Nagar Station House Officer T Purushotham Rao, the owner had not directly informed police about the challan before posting it online. Following the viral post, special teams were deployed to analyse CCTV footage and track the movement of the scooter using available technical inputs.

After a coordinated search operation, police located the two-wheeler and detained the person riding it. Authorities later brought the scooter to the Habeeb Nagar police station for further examination. Investigators are now working to determine whether the detained individual was the original thief or someone who may have unknowingly purchased the stolen vehicle.

Following the recovery, the complainant thanked Hyderabad police for their swift response and successful action. Meanwhile, the case has sparked discussion on social media about the need for improved systems to flag stolen vehicles in traffic databases, to prevent challans from being issued to victims and to strengthen coordination between theft records and enforcement systems.
