Guwahati Police Arrest Two For Painting Sonam Wangchuk's Portrait
Two held after Wangchuk portrait painting incident in Guwahati.
Guwahati Police on Saturday arrested two men for allegedly painting portraits of climate activist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk at public places without obtaining official permission from authorities. The arrests were made as Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28, was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi after his health condition deteriorated.
The police registered a case against Nakul Mili and Gaurav Singh at Dispur Police Station in Guwahati. According to officials, the two men allegedly painted portraits of Wangchuk beneath the Basistha flyover and near the Jyoti-Bishnu International Art Theatre. Authorities said the artwork was created in public areas without prior approval, leading to legal action.
Mili, a resident of Dibrugarh, and Singh, who resides in Guwahati's Dakshingaon area, have been taken into custody as part of the investigation. Police officials said further action would be decided after examining the details of the case and gathering additional information related to the incident.

The arrests came amid growing attention around Wangchuk's protest in Delhi, where he has been demanding accountability over alleged NEET examination irregularities and seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His hunger strike and subsequent hospitalisation have drawn reactions from supporters, political leaders, and civil society groups.
Meanwhile, Guwahati Police said another case has also been registered in connection with a separate incident involving the painting of Wangchuk's portrait in the city. Officials added that efforts are underway to identify and trace the individuals involved in that case.
The investigation into both incidents is currently ongoing, with police stating that further legal steps will be taken based on the findings. The cases have highlighted the authorities' focus on regulating activities carried out in public spaces without required permissions.
