Gurugram Doctor Arrested After Death of 4-Year-Old Boy
Gurugram doctor held for running over and killing 4-year-old boy.
A tragic incident in Gurugram’s Surat Nagar Phase 2 has left the community reeling after Dr. Hitesh Sharma, a government doctor, was arrested on Friday for allegedly running over a four-year-old boy with his SUV on September 15, resulting in the child’s death. The harrowing event, which occurred in a residential area, has ignited public outrage and intensified scrutiny over road safety and the conduct of public officials.
According to the police complaint lodged by the boy’s father, Jitender, the incident took place around 4:30 PM when his son was playing near their home in the densely populated Surat Nagar Phase 2 locality. Sharma, driving a white Mahindra Scorpio SUV, struck the child, causing critical injuries.
“The car driver stopped and got out, but when he saw the child was seriously injured, he fled the scene,” Jitender recounted in his complaint. With the assistance of nearby residents, Jitender rushed his son to the Civil Hospital in Sector 10, Gurugram, where medical staff declared the boy dead due to severe internal injuries and head trauma.
The incident prompted swift action from the Gurugram Police, who registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Sharma at Rajendra Park police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving, causing death by negligence, and fleeing the scene of an accident. Following a five-day investigation, authorities apprehended Sharma on Friday evening and seized his vehicle, which is now undergoing forensic examination to corroborate eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage from the area.

Sharma, a medical officer posted at a government health facility in Gurugram, reportedly claimed during initial questioning that he panicked after the accident, leading to his decision to flee. Police sources indicate that Sharma’s failure to report the incident or seek immediate medical aid for the child has aggravated the charges against him. “The accused showed a gross lack of responsibility, especially given his profession,” said a senior official from Rajendra Park police station, who added that the investigation is ongoing to determine if additional factors, such as speeding or distracted driving, contributed to the tragedy.
As the case progresses, the Gurugram Police have assured a thorough investigation, with Sharma scheduled to be produced before a local court for further proceedings. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for accountability and vigilance on the roads, particularly in protecting vulnerable pedestrians like young children.
