First-Year Student Suffers Massive Bruises as Ragging Sparks Outrage
A first-year student suffers severe injuries during ragging in west bengal
A first-year student at Purulia Government Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal sustained serious injuries after being assaulted in a ragging incident on February 1, officials said. The victim, identified as Mehboob Islam from Domkal in Murshidabad district, was left with massive bruises on his back and required hospitalization for treatment.
Two senior students, studying in the second and fourth years, have been accused of orchestrating the assault. According to reports, Rishabh Singh and Ayan Bagchi allegedly instructed Islam’s classmates to attack him as part of ragging activities, threatening students who refused to comply. Under this pressure, the first-year students reportedly carried out the assault, leaving Islam injured.
Family members of the victim visited the hospital and lodged a formal complaint with the authorities. A meeting was also held with both parties, during which Islam and his family demanded strict action against the accused students to ensure accountability and prevent further incidents.

The accused students have denied the allegations, stating they are willing to accept punishment if the charges against them are proven. Their response comes amid heightened scrutiny of ragging incidents in educational institutions, which are considered serious criminal offenses under Indian law.
Medical college authorities confirmed the incident, with Sukumar Biswas, medical superintendent and vice principal, assuring that appropriate action would be taken against those responsible. The administration emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and disciplined environment on campus, particularly for first-year students vulnerable to ragging practices.
This incident has raised concerns over campus safety and enforcement of anti-ragging regulations, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and preventive measures across medical and other professional colleges in the state.
