Fake CBI Gang Steals Rs 2.3 Crore in Delhi
Robbers posing as CBI loot businessman, two arrested.
A gang impersonating Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials robbed approximately Rs 2.3 crore from a businessman’s office in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar, police reported on August 22, 2025. The brazen robbery, executed on August 19, targeted Manpreet, a Ghaziabad resident involved in finance, property, and construction, who had stored nearly Rs 2.5 crore in business earnings at his office.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam, the incident unfolded when Manpreet instructed his friend, Ravi Shankar, to collect Rs 1.10 crore from the Vivek Vihar office and deliver it to his residence. As Shankar exited with the cash, four individuals, including a woman, intercepted him using two cars. Claiming to be CBI officers, they assaulted Shankar, snatched the bag, and forced their way into the office. There, they attacked another employee, Deepak Maheshwari, and looted the remaining cash.
The gang confined Shankar and Maheshwari in their vehicles, later abandoning them at Chintamani underpass and Nigambodh Ghat, respectively, with threats to stay silent. Following Manpreet’s complaint, police analyzed CCTV footage, tracing the vehicles to Faridabad. Investigations revealed the cars were hired by an NGO in Delhi’s Saket area, leading to the arrest of two suspects: Papori Baruah, 31, the NGO’s secretary from Assam, and Deepak, 32, from Tughlakabad.

Police recovered Rs 1.08 crore from the suspects, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the remaining gang members and recover the rest of the loot. “This was a meticulously planned crime, exploiting the fear of authority,” Gautam said. The incident has raised alarms in Vivek Vihar, with local businesses demanding heightened security to prevent such audacious crimes.
