Delhi Hit-and-Run: 24-Year-Old Arrested After Delhi Man Dies in Car Crash

24-year-old Agra man Harshit Mehta arrested for mowing down 35-year-old Rajendra Gupta in Central Delhi hit-and-run.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a 35-year-old in central Delhi, police said on Thursday. The incident took place on November 2 when police received a call from LNJP Hospital reporting that a man had been brought in dead following a road accident. The victim was later identified as Rajendra Gupta, a resident of Krishna Nagar in east Delhi.

According to officials, the police launched a detailed investigation immediately after the incident was reported. CCTV footage from several locations along nearby roads was analyzed to trace the vehicle involved. Following a meticulous technical examination and field inquiries, investigators identified a car registered in Uttar Pradesh as the one connected to the crash.

“After identifying the vehicle, a notice under Section 133 of the Motor Vehicles Act was issued to its registered owner, Harshit Mehta, aged 24, a resident of Agra,” a senior police officer said. When summoned, Mehta appeared before the police and confessed to his role in the accident. The car used during the offence was also recovered and has been seized for further forensic examination.

The preliminary findings suggest that Mehta’s car struck the victim near a busy intersection before fleeing the scene. Officials are now verifying whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or driving at excessive speed at the time of the accident. Police said additional sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to rash and negligent driving and causing death may be invoked.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to stricter enforcement against reckless driving in the national capital. “Those who drive irresponsibly and endanger lives will face strict consequences,” the investigating officer said. The incident comes amid a rising number of hit-and-run cases across Delhi, prompting city police to increase surveillance and step up road safety campaigns.
