Deadly Bus Crash in MP Kills Labourer and Injures Dozens After Reckless Driving

One killed, 24 injured as labour bus flips on MP highway due to rash driving.

A catastrophic accident claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman and left 24 others injured when a private bus carrying laborers overturned on the Agra-Mumbai National Highway near Abhaypur village in Shajapur district, approximately 12 kilometers from the district headquarters, in the early hours of Sunday. The incident, occurring around 4 am IST, has underscored the dangers of rash driving and raised concerns about the safety of long-haul transport for workers.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Ghanshyam Malviya, the bus was ferrying laborers returning from Jamnagar, Gujarat, to their hometowns, primarily in Uttar Pradesh. The vehicle, traveling within the Sunera police station limits, lost control due to alleged reckless driving by the driver, leading to the devastating overturn. Gayatri Bai, a resident of Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh, tragically died at the scene, while 24 other passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to severe trauma.

Emergency response teams, including police, traffic officials, and ambulances, swiftly arrived at the site to manage the crisis. The injured were promptly transported to the Shajapur District Hospital, where medical staff are providing critical care. Preliminary reports suggest that some passengers suffered fractures and head injuries, with a few in critical condition requiring specialized treatment. Authorities have secured the accident site, and an investigation is underway to determine the precise cause, with early indications pointing to high speed and possible driver fatigue.

The laborers, primarily from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, were returning after completing seasonal work in Gujarat’s industrial sector. Local residents and eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with scattered belongings and cries for help piercing the pre-dawn silence. The overturned bus, a 40-seater vehicle, was heavily damaged, complicating rescue efforts.

This tragedy follows a pattern of highway accidents in Madhya Pradesh, with a similar incident in 2024 claiming multiple lives on the same stretch of NH-44. The recurring issue has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, including speed limits and mandatory rest periods for drivers. Community leaders are also advocating for improved road infrastructure and safety audits, particularly at construction zones and high-traffic corridors like the Agra-Mumbai highway.

Police have registered a case against the driver, who is currently absconding, under charges of rash driving and causing death by negligence. Efforts are ongoing to trace the driver and ascertain whether mechanical failure or road conditions contributed to the accident. The district administration has assured support to the victims’ families, including compensation for Gayatri Bai’s kin, in line with state policies.

As the investigation progresses, this tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by migrant laborers relying on road transport, urging authorities to prioritize safety measures to prevent such heart-wrenching losses in the future.
