Cyberabad Police Strengthen Case Against Union Minister’s Son Under POCSO Act

Cyberabad Police add stricter charges in POCSO case involving Union Minister’s son during ongoing probe.

Trouble has deepened for Bandi Sai Bhageerath, son of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar, after Cyberabad Police added more serious charges in an ongoing sexual assault case involving a minor survivor. The case, which was first registered on May 8, has now been strengthened with additional legal provisions following further investigation and evidence collection by the police.

According to officials, the case was initially filed based on a complaint by the minor survivor and was later revised after investigators examined her statement and gathered additional supporting material. The police have now invoked Section 64 (2) (m) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 5(1) and 6 of the POCSO Act, which deal with aggravated sexual assault on a minor and prescribe stringent punishment, including long-term rigorous imprisonment and, in some cases, life imprisonment.

Investigators also said the survivor’s statement was recorded before a magistrate under Section 183 of the BNS, which has further strengthened the prosecution’s case. Police teams have reportedly collected electronic evidence, witness statements, and other forensic materials as part of the ongoing probe, which remains active and under detailed examination.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Cyberabad Special Operations Team (SOT) carried out a naka-bandi operation near a tech park and arrested Bhageerath, 25, around 8:15 pm on Saturday. He was later produced before a court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody, while investigators continue to review additional digital and forensic evidence.

Police sources also claimed that Bhageerath admitted to the offence during questioning at the police station in the presence of witnesses, though officials have not released detailed statements on the alleged confession. Investigators have said the case is being built on multiple strands of evidence, including witness testimony and electronic records.

Meanwhile, political reactions have intensified, with BRS working president KT Rama Rao demanding the immediate removal of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar from the Union Cabinet to ensure an impartial investigation. He also raised questions about the handling of the accused prior to arrest and alleged pressure on the survivor’s family, while police officials maintain that the investigation is ongoing and further evidence is being examined.
