Crude Bombs, Threat Letter Recovered Outside BJP Leader’s House In Basirhat
Police investigate suspected political intimidation in North 24 Parganas.
Panic spread in a village in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Thursday after crude bombs and a threatening letter were found outside the residence of a local BJP leader in the Basirhat area. The incident occurred in Shasina village under the jurisdiction of Basirhat police station, where BJP booth president Anil Baran Mallick resides. Police and central security forces later reached the spot and safely removed the explosives.
According to local residents, unidentified miscreants allegedly placed two crude bombs at the entrance of Mallick’s house during the night before fleeing the area under the cover of darkness. The incident came to light early in the morning when Mallick opened the door and noticed suspicious objects near the entrance. The discovery quickly created tension in the locality, drawing crowds of villagers and prompting immediate police intervention.
Officials said that apart from the explosives, a threatening letter and bottles tied to the balcony grille were also recovered from the premises. The materials were seized by police as part of the investigation. Security personnel, including members of central forces deployed in the region, conducted searches in and around the area to ensure there were no additional explosive materials left behind.

Anil Baran Mallick, who has reportedly been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party for nearly two decades, claimed he had not previously faced such threats. While he refrained from naming any individual directly, he alleged that political rivalry could be the reason behind the intimidation attempt. Local BJP workers also accused rival political elements of targeting the party following recent electoral developments in the area.
Police have registered a case based on a written complaint and launched a detailed investigation into the matter. Authorities are questioning local residents and examining how the explosives were brought into the locality and who may have been involved in the incident. Additional security personnel have been deployed in the area, and route marches are being conducted to reassure residents and maintain law and order.
The incident has added to ongoing political tensions in parts of West Bengal, where clashes and allegations between rival political parties are frequently reported during and after elections. Officials said efforts are underway to identify the individuals responsible and assured that strict action would be taken once the investigation progresses.
