Cries Lead to a Miraculous Rescue: Villagers Save Newborn Girl Buried Alive
Police rescue 15-day-old from horrifying ordeal.
In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the community, a 15-day-old baby girl was rescued by police after being buried alive in Godapur village, Shahjahanpur, on Sunday. The miraculous survival of the infant, discovered when a vigilant villager spotted her tiny hand protruding from the soil among small trees, has sparked both relief and outrage as authorities scramble to uncover the perpetrators behind this heinous act.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI that the villager, alerted by the baby’s faint cries, immediately contacted the police. A rapid-response team rushed to the scene, carefully extracting the infant from the shallow grave. “The child was still breathing, and we ensured she was immediately taken to a local government hospital,” Dwivedi said. Due to her critical condition, she was later shifted to the Government Medical College for advanced care.
Rajesh Kumar, principal of the medical college, confirmed the baby’s dire state upon admission. “She arrived in serious condition and has been placed in the ICU with a dedicated doctor overseeing her treatment,” he said, noting that the infant, estimated to be around 15 days old, is receiving round-the-clock care to stabilize her fragile health. Medical staff are cautiously optimistic, but the newborn faces a challenging recovery due to the trauma endured.

SP Dwivedi emphasized that the police are working tirelessly to trace the baby’s parents and identify those responsible for the crime. “This is a deeply disturbing case, and the entire matter is under thorough investigation,” he stated. Preliminary inquiries suggest the act may be linked to social stigmas or economic pressures, though no motive has been confirmed. Forensic teams are examining the site for evidence, and local residents are being questioned to piece together the circumstances.
The incident has reignited discussions about female infanticide and child abandonment in rural India, issues that continue to plague certain regions despite awareness campaigns. Community leaders and activists are calling for stricter enforcement and social interventions to prevent such tragedies. As the infant fights for her life, Shahjahanpur’s residents are rallying in support, with many volunteering to assist the police in their search for answers. The case underscores the urgent need for societal change and stronger protections for vulnerable newborns.
